Why Men Should Care About Skincare
Men's skin is biologically different from women's — it's thicker, produces more sebum (oil), and takes a beating from daily shaving. Yet skincare is still widely ignored by men, leading to premature ageing, persistent breakouts, and skin that looks dull and fatigued.
The good news? You don't need a complicated routine. A consistent, simple approach makes a dramatic difference over time.
The Core 4-Step Routine
Step 1: Cleanser (Morning & Evening)
Washing your face removes oil, sweat, and environmental pollutants. Use a gentle, pH-balanced facial cleanser — not bar soap, which strips the skin's natural moisture barrier.
- Oily/acne-prone skin: Look for a foaming cleanser with salicylic acid.
- Dry or sensitive skin: Choose a cream or gel cleanser with hydrating ingredients like glycerin.
- Normal skin: A basic gentle cleanser works perfectly.
Wash with lukewarm water — hot water dries out the skin unnecessarily.
Step 2: Moisturiser (Morning & Evening)
Even oily skin needs moisture. Skipping moisturiser causes your skin to overproduce oil to compensate. Apply a lightweight moisturiser while your skin is still slightly damp to lock in hydration.
For daytime, choose a moisturiser that includes SPF 30 or higher. Sun damage is the leading cause of premature skin ageing — this single step makes a huge long-term difference.
Step 3: SPF (Morning Only)
If your moisturiser doesn't contain SPF, apply a dedicated sunscreen every single morning — rain or shine. UV rays penetrate clouds and glass windows. A broad-spectrum SPF 30–50 applied daily prevents dark spots, fine lines, and more serious skin concerns.
Step 4: Targeted Treatment (Evening)
Once your basic routine is established, add one targeted treatment in the evenings:
- Retinol — for anti-ageing and improving skin texture. Start with a low concentration (0.025–0.05%) a few nights a week.
- Niacinamide — for reducing pores, oiliness, and uneven skin tone.
- Vitamin C serum — for brightening dull skin and antioxidant protection.
Don't try all three at once. Pick one, use it consistently for 4–6 weeks, then assess results.
Post-Shave Skincare
Shaving causes micro-irritation to the skin's surface. After shaving:
- Rinse with cool water to close pores.
- Apply an alcohol-free aftershave balm or toner to calm irritation.
- Follow with your regular moisturiser.
Avoid aftershaves with high alcohol content — they feel dramatic but actually damage the skin barrier over time.
Weekly Additions
| Treatment | Frequency | Benefit |
|---|---|---|
| Exfoliant (chemical or physical) | 2–3x per week | Removes dead skin, prevents ingrown hairs |
| Face mask (clay) | Once per week | Deep cleans pores, reduces oiliness |
| Eye cream | Daily (evening) | Reduces dark circles and puffiness |
The Golden Rule
Consistency beats perfection. A simple routine done every day produces better results than an elaborate routine done sporadically. Start with cleanser and moisturiser with SPF — do that reliably for a month — and build from there. Your skin will thank you in your 40s.
